Rev. Mr. Walter (Walt) C. Lance, 87, of Wallingford, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 23, 2022. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Charles Walter Lance and the late Anna Mae (Delaney) Lance. Walt was the husband of Mary (Wills) Lance, and they celebrated 61 years of marriage this past September. He attended North Catholic High School, and he served his country honorably in the U.S. Army.
While working full-time and attending night school, Walt earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at LaSalle University and his Master of Science in Accounting at Temple University. He spent the majority of his career at N.W. Ayer, an advertising agency founded in Philadelphia and later headquartered in New York City, where he served as the Senior Vice President-Controller and a Member of the Advertising Board. Walt often spoke of his commute to and from New York City, and the many friends he met along the way.
Walt was ordained as a Permanent Deacon in 1993 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, and served faithfully at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, Philadelphia, and at St. John Chrysostom Catholic Church, Wallingford. He was actively involved in the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, attended retreats at Malvern Retreat House for almost seventy years, traveled extensively with his wife, Mary, spent the winter months in Madeira Beach, Florida for over twenty years, and most enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Walt is survived by his six children: Walter (Linda) Lance, Mary (Bruce) Smith, Robert Lance, Joseph (Jennifer) Lance, Thomas (Irene) Lance, and Peter Lance; his eleven grandchildren: Veronica Lance, Cate Lance, Abby Lance, Tommy Smith, Marina Lance, Annemarie Smith, Robert Lance, Tommy Lance, Matt Smith, Michael Lance, and Kevin Lance; and many other close friends and relatives.
His Funeral Mass will be held on Monday February 28 at 11:00 AM at St. John Chrysostom Church 617 S. Providence Rd. Wallingford. Family and friends are invited to his viewing on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Carr Funeral Home 935 S. Providence Rd. Wallingford or on Monday from 10 to 10:45 AM at St. John Chrysostom Church. Burial will follow in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his name to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (https://ssvpusa.org/donate/).
