
Susanne P. Burke(nee Buckley), 87, beloved Mother, Sister and Grandmother passed away on April 13, 2016 at St. Francis Country House in Lansdowne, PA. Susanne was born in Northeast Philadelphia on March 23, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Susan Buckley of Chester. She was the wife for over 48 years of the late Donald R. Burke; sister of the late Arthur Buckley, Jr. and Sister Bernadine (Geraldine Buckley).
Susanne is survived by her children, Gerald (Kirsten) Burke of Southlake, TX and Richard Burke of Media, PA; her four grandchildren, Emma, Connor, Candace and Katelyn Burke. She has one living sibling, Donna Buckley of Chester, PA.
Susanne graduated from Notre Dame High School in Moylan, PA and worked in retail until she married in 1957. Don and Susanne settled in Newtown Square, later moving to Broomall, and were active members of St. Anastasia parish for over 40 years. Susanne attended mass daily, helped organize and form the local Charismatic Prayer group and also served as a Eucharistic minister.
Susanne loved children and was a founding member of the Mothers Club of Delaware County where she served as president for more than a decade. Later in life, she returned to work as a nanny at the Bell School in Newtown Square for 14 years. She spent the last 15 years at St. Francis Country House. She was happy there, always smiling, laughing and talking with her friends. The staff and residents referred to her as the “Mayor of 2 Pavilion.”
The mass of Christian burial will be held at 11am on Tuesday, April 19th at St. Anastasia Church in Newtown Square, PA. Visitation will precede mass between 10am and 11am in church. Burial will follow at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Susanne’s life.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Catholic Social Services, 222 North 17th St. 3rd floor, Philadelphia, PA 19103. The family would like to thank the St. Francis Country House for their dedication to her care and well-being.
