Regina Snyder, a former long time Swarthmore resident passed away suddenly on July 9th, 2017 at Rose Tree Place. She was 90. She had recently moved to Rose Tree Place after 52 years in Swarthmore.
Born on July 13, 1926 to the late William and Elizabeth McDermott, she was the oldest of four children. Her parents had emigrated from Scotland the prior year and settled in Chester, Pa. Her father passed away without insurance in 1939 when Regina was 13 years old, leaving behind four girls and a wife with a prior illness. Soon thereafter Regina had to support her family with various jobs including waitressing at the Inglenook restaurant in Swarthmore, Pa.
Regina graduated from Notre Dame High school for girls in Moylan, Pa. in 1944. She then was employed with AT&T in Philadelphia until 1951. She met the love of her life, Andrew Snyder, in 1949 and married him on February 11, 1950. Three sons followed (Michael, Stephen, and David) and in 1965 she moved to Benjamin West Ave. in Swarthmore to raise her family. After she raised her kids, Regina was able to attend college at Neumann University and study philosophy and psychology.
Throughout her life Regina was an advocate for world peace. She volunteered for various organizations to promote her causes including the Justice and Peace Committee of St. John’s. She was a supporter of the poor, underprivileged, and the downtrodden, even volunteering as a crisis counselor and an emotional support line.
Later in life Regina was able to pursue her artistic bent, taking a keen interest in pottery and painting. She had a real love for books, working in several different bookstores over an eight year period. She was an avid book collector.
Regina also developed a special interest in Jungian psychology, joining several groups that studied and discussed his theories.
Regina was a vibrant charming woman with a wonderful joie de vivre. But most of all she was the center of her family. There was nothing more she enjoyed then spending time with her family and friends. She was a legendary grandparent in the Strath Haven schools, attending most of her grandkids sporting events, band concerts, ballets and piano recitals.
The night before she passed away Regina was surrounded by her family at a special early 91st birthday dinner. She was a member of St. John Chrysostom Parish.
