Regina Klewicki Flynn, known by most during her later decades as “Maudie”, passed away on November 14 at the age of 91 in her home at Plush Mills Senior Living in Wallingford, Pa. after a long illness. Regina was preceded in death last year by her beloved husband of 62 years, Patrick Flynn. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Nell Benson and son-in-law John Benson of Wayne, Pa: her son, Patrick Flynn and daughter-in-law Shari Platt of New York City: her grandsons Jeffrey DeLong, Alex Flynn and Daniel Flynn: her granddaughter-in-law Olivia DeLong: as well as by John’s children Sam Benson and Lucy Wilder and Lucy’s husband Packy and their children Eileen and Ben: and by many nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Bussells and Alexandra Klevytska.
Regina was born and raised in shadow of Fort McHenry in the Locust Point neighborhood of Baltimore, arriving just before the Great Depression. After graduating from Seton High School she served as a secretary in the Baltimore office of the FBI, working in the field on such notable cases as the Alger Hiss “Pumpkin Papers” espionage episode. In her later years she returned to the workforce as a secretary at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center.
In between those engagements Regina produced her most meaningful work, nurturing her family through the challenges of a fire department life. She met her husband Pat at a Baltimore Orioles game and spent many summer evenings with her family enjoying games, even though she may have been considered something of a jinx. She was a constant companion to Pat and an unflinching presence for their children, relishing all aspects of motherhood. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and until her final breath. She was proud of her Polish heritage and of Pope John Paul II the Great. Regina loved the beach and was usually the first person with a tan, as she would hunker down between the dunes starting on Easter weekend while others were walking the beach in
overcoats wishing for Spring. She and Pat retired to Ocean City, Maryland, their warm yellow house on the bay serving as a magnet for their children and grandchildren whose lives will forever be touched by lovely memories of trips to visit Maudie and Pop “down the ocean.”
Regina spent the last four years of her life residing at Plush Mills, where her easy smile and graceful bearing earned her a new legion of friends among the residents and staff who came to mean so much to her in her latter days.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, November 22 at 11 AM at St. John Chrysostom Church 617 S. Providence Rd., Wallingford, PA 19086, preceded at 10 AM by viewing and visitation at the Church.
