John S. Saunders, 74, of Swarthmore, formerly of Mayfair, passed away on Wednesday, March 25th. He was born in Philadelphia to the late Peter and Margaret Saunders. John was a graduate of Father Judge High School, then went on to graduate from the Wharton School and Widener University. He was a veteran of the US Army with whom he served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was self employed for many years as a blacksmith in the Delaware and Chester County areas. John was an accomplished cook and enjoyed reading, especially about history. He also had a passion for woodworking and restoring old furniture.
In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his siblings, Hugh Saunders, Chalie Saunders and Peggy Iavecchia; son-in-law, Timothy Gaige. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Elizabeth Saunders; Children, Joseph Saunders (Gabrielle), JeanMarie Scully (Richard), and MaryBeth Gaige; brother, Peter Saunders; sisters, Patricia Murray, and Kathleen Sheehan; grandchildren, John Scully, MaryKate Scully, Annabelle Gaige, Rosemarie Gaige, and Declan Gaige; many nieces and nephews.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated privately on Saturday, March 28th at St. John Chrysostom Church. Burial will follow at a later date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to Katie's Krusaders at http://katieskrusaders.com/make-a-donation/
