John Richard Eckman, known by Bus to his family and friends, died on April 7, 2023 at his home in Springfield, PA. Bus was the oldest of four children born to Richard and Nancy (Casson) Eckman in Chester, PA. He graduated from St. James Catholic High School where he was the editor of the school newspaper and excelled academically earning a National Merit Scholarship, all while working as a caddy on weekends and in the summer. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.S. in Nuclear Physics, and later earned an MBA from the University of Connecticut. Bus worked in various fields, starting first at General Electric as a missile fire control engineer on the U.S. Navy’s Polaris submarines. He then worked with Dorr Oliver and Keeler Boiler as a project manager designing material handling systems, environmental control and fluidized bed combustion systems. He traveled the world for his work across Canada, Europe, Africa, the Middle and Far East as well as to 41 of the 50 US states.
Bus is survived by his sister Kathryn Link, brothers Michael (Rose),Carl (Ellen), nieces Cara (Eric) McCandless, Julie (Ouadie) Benyoussef, nephews Christopher, Drew (Jamie), Christian (Adina), Kurt (Natalie), and 10 great nephews. He was predeceased by great nephew Wesley and great niece Leila. Bus was known for his generosity to his siblings and their families as well as extending this generosity to others outside his immediate family. Bus enjoyed following his favorite teams, especially Dayton Flyers basketball, the Phillies, and the Eagles. He especially enjoyed summers at the New Jersey shore: as a young man with family along with his second family, the Donatos (Marty, Bob, MaryAnn and Larry). He looked forward to spending time reading at the beach, walking the boardwalk, and eating waffles and ice cream and macaroons. John's family would like to acknowledge and thank Sarah Dagge for her caring assistance and companionship to John over many years.
