John J. O’Malley, 88 of Brookhaven passed away on Jan. 3, 2017. He was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (O’Malley) O’Malley. He graduated from Resurrection School and St. James High School, Class of 1945. He served in the 43rd Division in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 and was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class. He worked as an instrument technician for over 40 years retiring from then BP Oil Company in 1987.
Mr. O’Malley was one of the founders and coaches of the Brookhaven Biddy Basketball League. He coached basketball and baseball at Our Lady of Charity and for Brookhaven Little League. He was a member of the Retired Oil Workers Seniors, a member of the Parkside Senior Club and a lifelong member of the Parkside Fire Company. He was a member of the St. James Alumni Association and Our Lady of Charity Church. He was an avid sports fan and a talented wood carver.
He was predeceased by his siblings Catherine Phillips and Thomas O’Malley.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Dorothy (Pace) O’Malley of Brookhaven, his children John (Janice) O’Malley of Charlotte, NC, Cathy (Dan) Cipollini of West Grove, Tom (Wendy) O’Malley of San Ramon, CA, 6 grandchildren, Jennifer (Matt Poirer) O’Malley of San Francisco, CA, John Patrick (Kayla) O’Malley of Charlotte, NC, Julianna O’Malley of Baltimore, MD, Michael Cipollini of West Grove, Katie O’Malley and Tara O’Malley of San Ramon, CA. and great granddaughter Maggie O’Malley of Charlotte. his siblings Mary Lastowka of Glen Mills, James O’Malley of Mountain View, CA, Noreen McGlinchey of Wilmington, DE and many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass on Saturday Jan. 7 at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Charity Church 231 Upland Rd. Brookhaven, PA 19015. Friends may call from 9 to 10:45 AM at the Church. Int. St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, Chester Heights.
