Judge Eugene Monaco, 94, formerly of Nether Providence passed away on September 9th at his summer residence in Glen Mills, PA. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a pillar of his community.
He was born in Queens, NY to Pasquale and Elvira Monaco. Gene graduated from Richmond Hill High School with the class of 1945. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and subsequently received a Master’s degree from the University of Delaware. Later in his career Gene earned a Juris Doctorate from Temple University School of Law.
Gene worked for 33 years as a mechanical engineer and manager for Westinghouse. After his retirement, he became an assistant district attorney in Delaware County and was later elected District Justice in the Delaware County Courts. Gene was elected to the board of commissioners for Nether Providence Twp. where he for served 27 years, and as president for the majority of that duration.
Gene was a Platoon Sergeant in the United States Army where he served during the occupation of Korea in World War II. Gene was an avid woodworker, crafting many pieces for family and friends. He was also a talented multi-instrumental musician, playing professional upright bass in the Catskill mountain resort circuit in the 1940s. Later he was a member of the Greater Wilmington String Band and the Gulf Coast Banjo Society in Snookhaven, FL.
Gene is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Monaco; daughters, Suzanne Urso (Louis), and Lorraine Wallace (Donald); sons Eugene Monaco (Madeline), Paul Monaco, and Thomas Monaco (Nicole Reynolds); sister, Eleanor Villardi; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
His funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 16th 10:00am at the
Chapel at Maris Grove, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, PA 19342
Burial of ashes will follow in SS Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
