Donald F. Morrison, of Newtown Square Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully at age 91 on July 11th.
A loving husband, father, grandfather, educator, with a deep passion for railroads, math, science, history, and the outdoors, Donald always had a story or funny anecdote about practically any topic you could imagine.
Donald was born in Stoneham, Massachusetts on February 10th, 1931 to Daniel Norman and Agnes Beatrice (nee Packard). Donald graduated from Melrose High School and attended Boston University where he received a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration in 1953, then an M.S. Statistics from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1957 and a Ph.D. Statistics from Virginia Tech in 1960.
Donald worked at M.I.T Lincoln Labs, National Institutes of Health, and Bell Labs before becoming a professor in the Statistics Department at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, from 1963 until his retirement in 1999. At Penn, Donald loved teaching, writing, and performing research by applying statistical methods to many scientific fields.
Donald is the author of two text books, Applied Linear Statistical Methods and Multivariate Statistical Methods. Donald contributed to many academic journals, and was Editor of American Statistician 1972 - 1975, Associate Editor Biometrics 1972 - 1974. Donald was an active contributor to the B&M Railroad Historical Society and the Norfolk & Western Historical Society. Donald’s thirst for knowledge was limitless, with many self directed projects including measuring the seasonal variation of tree voltage and the effect of ocean water temperatures in Maine lobsters.
An amateur railroad historian his entire life, with a special interest in signaling systems, Donald collected a library full of historic books, documents, signal equipment, and created model railroads with his family. After his retirement, Donald volunteered as a Trainman at the Wilmington and Western Railroad from 2001 to 2011.
Donald is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis Morrison, his two sons, Norman and Stephen, three grandchildren Charlotte, Hazen, and Isobel, and his sister, Eleanor.
A memorial Service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wallingford, PA on August 27th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, we ask for donations to the Melrose High School Scholarship Fund, as Donald believed in the power of education to transform lives.
