Carmela Gioia, 94, formerly of Southwest Philadelphia passed away on Wednesday, May 26th 2021 at Vitas Hospice in Darby, PA. Carmela was born in Sulmona, Italy. She led an eventful life, surviving Fascism and World War II and the hardships that followed. She and her mom came to America in 1948 and they settled with her sister in Egg Harbor, NJ. She moved to Philadelphia upon her marriage to Frank Gioia in 1952. Carmela was always involved and active. She helped at school, travelled, worked, was a member of several seniors groups and loved going to the casinos. She was a good friend to many. To her family, and many lucky friends, she was the best cook in the world. An illness in 2016 caused her to move in with her daughter in Woodlyn, PA where she spent her remaining years.
She is survived by her son, David (Anne); daughter, Loretta Ciarrocchi (Giovanni); 3 granddaughters, Maria, Elisa, and Christina; 2 nephews, 2 nieces, and 2 great-nephews. Carmela was a true family matriarch, an example of strength, wisdom, and faith and will be deeply missed by her family.
Her funeral services and burial will be held privately.
