Arthur “Arty” L. Abbott, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 13, 2026, in Voorhees, New Jersey at age 81. Born December 20, 1944, in Chester, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Maurice W. Abbott and Margaret “Frances” (née Joy) Abbott.

Arthur graduated from St. James High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph's University
and a master’s degree from Temple University. He was a career educator and administrator at Smith School and Edmonds School in the School District of Philadelphia.

A memorable influence on students, colleagues, friends, family, and all who made his acquaintance, Arthur was blessed with many talents. His extraordinary intelligence and unique sense of humor made him a “Most Unforgettable Character.” With guitar in hand, he brought joy and laughter to family gatherings, entertaining loved ones with his “spirited” musical repertoire. His legacy is filled with many stories of how he personally and professionally positively impacted the lives of so many.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, William B. Abbott, Maurice E. Abbott, and Christopher Abbott; brothers-in-law Ronald B. Grapin and Timothy A. Rumsey; and nephews William E. Abbott, Alexander B. Abbott, and niece Bambi J. Abbott. He is survived by his siblings, Anthony A. Abbott (Carole), Mary-Joy Grapin, Judith A. Rumsey, Geoffrey G. Abbott (Doreen), Catherine McKittrick (Daniel), and Gregory G. Abbott (Fida), and his many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

On behalf of the St. James Catholic High School Alumni Association and his 1962 classmates, I extend our deepest sympathies and prayers on your loss. On April 18, 2027, the Alumni Association will remember Arthur at their annual Memorial Mass at St. Madeline's Church in Ridley Park. May he rest in peace!
